WHO WE ARE

KOS Inc. (Knowledge of Self), a 501(c)3, instills self-confidence in our children and youth by providing creative exploration and unconventional learning opportunities that ensure lifelong skills and nurture their growth. We offer a safe environment during out-of-school days – we nurture the spark that fuels community.

THE PROBLEM WE SOLVE

During public school breaks, children need a safe and secure place to be, learn, and thrive. KOS Inc. offers a safe and enriching environment providing practical life-long skills found in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) and home economics: sewing, carpentry, and more. We practice a foundation ethos of being truthful, kind, responsible, accountable, and self-motivated for children to develop self-awareness and practice autonomy increasing receptivity to all forms of learning. These components of social-emotional learning (SEL) are consistent in our projects.

WHO WE SERVE

We serve the people in Cobb County, Georgia, primarily in the city of Smyrna. Currently, we focus on children and youth 5-11 years old, offering programs during county school breaks with enriching day-long workshops.

WHY IT MATTERS

KOS Inc. knows working families need a safe and enriching environment for their children during out-of-school time (OST). In Cobb County, 26.6% of children come from single-parent homes; 11.7% live in poverty. Many households do not have the extra income to pay for childcare when there is OST, especially during the summer breaks. The after-school program in Smyrna, GA, does not operate during off-school days or on school breaks. Additionally, public schools are not designed to foster autonomy in learning. By addressing all of the crucial educational areas of enrichment, STEAM, home economics, and developing autonomy through social-emotional learning, we can improve the lives of children and youth, enabling them to be equipped for challenges and changes of life.

Introductory vocational courses offer a basic understanding of carpentry.

  • Classes in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) offer an understanding and exposure to these fields of study in a hands-on way unavailable in the public sector.

  • Home economics classes teach knitting, sewing, and financial literacy.

  • The offering of various disciplines in arts, such as acting, singing, dance, music, illustration, painting, sculpting, and pottery, nurture the latent creative spirit in each of us.
